iPhone 12 Back Glass Replacement
Published by TurboFix, Hyderabad · Last updated · 1 sources
Quick answer
The iPhone 12's back glass is bonded to its aluminium housing, so it's replaced either by removing the glass from the housing or by moving everything into a new housing. Check for a swollen battery first if the back has lifted.
The iPhone 12 has a glossy glass back with a aluminium frame. Because its back glass is bonded into the housing, replacing it is more involved than on newer iPhones with removable back glass.
Here's what affects a back glass job on the iPhone 12, what to check, and what to expect.
Advice that applies to every iPhone — data safety, what to check before booking and common causes — is in our iPhone back glass replacement guide; this page focuses on what's specific to the iPhone 12.

What makes the iPhone 12 different for this service?
- Back: glossy glass back; frame: aluminium.
- On the iPhone 12, the back glass is bonded into the aluminium housing rather than fitted as a separate part. Replacing it means either removing the broken glass from the housing or moving all internal parts into a new housing. Both are slower jobs than on models with removable back glass — ask which method your quote uses.
How does back glass replacement differ across the iPhone 12 series (2020)?
The iPhone 12 series kept glass backs glued to the frame and added MagSafe magnets behind the glass. Back glass work on the iPhone 12 has to protect the MagSafe ring and wireless coil, which we test afterwards.
What should I check on my iPhone 12 before booking?
- The iPhone 12 went on sale in October 2020, so unless it was bought much later or has extended cover, it's likely outside Apple's one-year limited warranty. You can confirm at checkcoverage.apple.com.
What do we test on your iPhone 12 before handing it back?
These checks are chosen for the iPhone 12's hardware, so features this model has are confirmed working after back glass replacement:
- Face ID set-up and unlock
- Lightning charging with a reference cable
- MagSafe alignment and wireless charging
- Ring/Silent switch
How does the iPhone 12 compare for back glass replacement?
| Model | Back construction |
|---|---|
| iPhone 12 | back glass bonded to the housing · aluminium frame |
| iPhone 12 mini | back glass bonded to the housing · aluminium frame |
| iPhone 12 Pro | back glass bonded to the housing · stainless steel frame |
| iPhone 12 Pro Max | back glass bonded to the housing · stainless steel frame |
| iPhone 11 | back glass bonded to the housing · aluminium frame |
| iPhone 13 | back glass bonded to the housing · aluminium frame |
On these points the iPhone 12 matches the iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 11 and iPhone 13. Parts can still differ in size or fit, so we always quote by exact model.

IPhone 12 back glass replacement: frequently asked questions
Can I keep using my iPhone 12 with a cracked back glass?
Usually, yes, but loose shards can cut your fingers, cracks tend to spread, and a broken back no longer keeps dust and moisture out. A case or a clear protective film can hold things together until it's replaced.
How is the iPhone 12 back glass replaced?
On the iPhone 12, the back glass is bonded into the aluminium housing rather than fitted as a separate part. Replacing it means either removing the broken glass from the housing or moving all internal parts into a new housing. Both are slower jobs than on models with removable back glass — ask which method your quote uses.
Will the colour and finish match?
We aim to match your iPhone 12's colour and glossy glass back. Replacement parts can vary slightly in shade or texture between suppliers, so if an exact match matters, ask to see the part before it's fitted.
Is the camera lens glass part of the back?
No. The camera lens covers are separate pieces of glass. If they're cracked too, they're quoted separately — see our iPhone 12 camera service page.
How much does iPhone 12 back glass replacement cost?
The price depends on the method (glass-only or housing swap) and the part grade. We quote after inspection, before any work starts.
Does replacing the back affect water resistance?
Apple rates the iPhone 12 IP68 (up to 6 metres for 30 minutes) when new. After the back has been removed, that rating can't honestly be guaranteed, even with new adhesive. Treat the phone as no longer water resistant.
