Phone Fell in Water? Here's What to Do in the First 30 Minutes

Water damage is one of the most common phone emergencies. The first 30 minutes are critical — here's exactly what to do.

Water damage is a nightmare scenario for any smartphone owner. Whether your phone slipped into a toilet, got caught in the rain, or fell into a swimming pool, the actions you take in the first 30 minutes can be the difference between a saved device and a complete loss.

Immediately: Take It Out and Power Off

The moment your phone contacts water, take it out immediately — every second matters. The first thing to do is power it off completely. Do NOT try to use it, check if it works, or plug it in to charge. Electricity and water are the worst combination. Press and hold the power button to shut it down immediately.

Remove SIM Card, Memory Card, and Case

Once off, remove your SIM card tray (use the ejector pin or a paperclip), any external memory cards, and your phone case. These accessories can trap water against the device. Set them aside to dry separately.

Do NOT Do These Things

  • Do NOT put it in rice — this is a myth. Rice does nothing in the timeframe that matters.
  • Do NOT use a hairdryer or heat gun — heat can damage internal components and melt adhesive.
  • Do NOT shake the phone vigorously — this spreads water to areas it hasn't reached yet.
  • Do NOT press buttons repeatedly to test if it works.
  • Do NOT charge it — even briefly — while any moisture may be present.

Gently Pat Dry and Tilt to Drain

Use a soft, lint-free cloth to gently pat the exterior dry. Tilt the phone at different angles to encourage water to drain from ports (USB-C, Lightning, headphone jack, speaker grilles). You can use a small amount of air from a can of compressed air to blow through ports, but keep it gentle and do not use hot air.

Get It to a Professional Within 24 Hours

Even if your phone appears to work after drying, water damage causes corrosion that develops over days and weeks. Minerals in water leave residue on circuit boards that eventually short-circuit components. Our 85% success rate applies to phones brought to us within 24 hours. After 48 hours, corrosion becomes significantly harder to reverse.

Frequently Asked Questions

My IP68-rated phone got wet — is it still damaged?

IP68 ratings degrade over time as seals wear. Even IP68 phones can suffer water damage, especially in salt water, chlorinated pools, or after drops that compromise the seal.

My phone works fine after getting wet — do I still need a repair?

Yes, we strongly recommend a professional inspection. Corrosion from water damage can take days or weeks to cause visible problems. A preventive clean now costs far less than a motherboard replacement later.

How much does water damage repair cost?

Water damage repair starts from ₹999 for a diagnostic and basic clean. Severe damage with component replacement is quoted after diagnosis. You only pay if we fix it.
